Description

Imagine a steakhouse experience, simplified and refined for the home cook. This dish centers around a perfectly cooked steak, adorned with a crisp, savory parmesan crust. The steak itself should be your favorite cut, around a pound in weight.

A leaner cut, without excessive marbling, works best to keep the overall balance of the dish in harmony. The parmesan crust adds a delightful textural contrast to the tender steak. Its salty, nutty flavor complements the rich taste of the beef, creating a satisfying and flavorful experience.

The crust is easy to prepare and adds a touch of elegance to the simple steak. Instead of the traditional carbohydrate-laden baked potato, this meal features a loaded baked avocado. The creamy avocado provides a healthy dose of fats and a smooth, cool counterpoint to the richness of the steak.

Each avocado half is generously filled with crispy bacon, melted cheese, and a dollop of tangy sour cream. For a visually appealing presentation, chill ripe avocados before slicing. The coldness helps them maintain their shape and firmness.

If you plan to bake the avocado, slightly under-ripe ones will hold their shape better during cooking. The green flesh softens and may change color slightly when exposed to heat. If you're seeking to elevate the flavors further, consider adding other classic steakhouse toppings.

Blue cheese crumbles or sautéed mushrooms offer delicious alternatives to the parmesan crust. You can also enhance the dish with a creamy sauce, such as a peppercorn sauce or a classic béarnaise. These sauces add richness and depth of flavor to the meal, perfectly complementing the steak and avocado.

This combination of flavors and textures is sure to satisfy. The juicy steak, the crispy parmesan crust, the creamy avocado, and the savory toppings create a symphony of tastes that will leave you feeling indulged and content. This dish is a celebration of simple, wholesome ingredients transformed into a truly memorable meal.

Instructions

    1.
Lay your steak on a flat surface and rub the olive oil into the flesh. Season the steak with seasoned salt, pepper, and garlic powder. You may choose to let the salt and oil marinate the steak in your refrigerator for a minimum of 1 hour. However, you can continue straight on to cooking the steak without marinating. Heat a cast-iron skillet over high heat on the stove. If you don t own a cast-iron skillet, use a non-stick pan.
    2.
Place the steak in the hot skillet seasoned side down and cook until the spices char. When the steak naturally releases from the pan, flip it over to cook on the other side to your desired level of doneness. Adjust the heat as necessary to avoid burning. The steak will continue to cook under a broiler in the next step, so you may wish to undercook it. Finish the steak by melting butter in the skillet over low heat. Use tongs to flip and coat the steak in butter in the skillet.
    3.
If you are using a cast-iron skillet, take it off the stove heat, and sprinkle a thick layer of parmesan cheese over the top of the steak. If you were using a regular non-stick pan, you ll have to transfer the steak to a sheet tray lined with parchment paper before topping it with parmesan cheese. Turn on your oven broiler to preheat on high heat, and sprinkle the italian seasoning over the cheese. Place the steak under the broiler and let it cook until the cheese melts, browns, and the edges of the steak caramelize - about 5 minutes.
    4.
When the steak is done, set it aside to rest while you make your side dish. Leave the oven broiler on. Line a sheet tray with parchment paper or use the same tray you cooked the steal on to arrange the avocado. Remove the avocado from its skin and slice it into thin slices. Fan out the avocado slices so they re slightly overlapping each other.
    5.
Sprinkle salt and squeeze lemon juice over the avocado. Add bacon bits or chopped cooked bacon on top of the avocado followed by cheddar cheese and minced chives. Cook the avocado under your broiler for just a few minutes until the avocado is warm and the cheese is melted. For serving, add sour cream on top or next to the loaded avocado. Serve the steak whole or slice it as depicted in the photo.
