Description

Imagine the comforting aroma of freshly baked bread wafting through your kitchen, a scent that promises warmth and satisfaction. This isn't just any bread; it's a rustic loaf, carefully shaped into a pleasing round, reminiscent of artisan creations found in cozy bakeries. The secret to its success lies in the use of a Dutch oven, a technique that coaxes the loaf to rise beautifully, developing a delightful crust that crackles with each slice.

But what truly sets this loaf apart is its captivating combination of flavors and textures. Studded throughout are jewel-like dried cherries, their sweetness concentrated and intensified, offering a burst of fruity goodness with every bite. Complementing the cherries are crunchy walnuts, adding a nutty depth and satisfying contrast to the soft, airy interior.

Picture slicing into this magnificent loaf. The crust gives way with a gentle crackle, revealing a tender crumb within, dotted with the vibrant cherries and earthy walnuts. Each slice is a delightful experience, a harmonious blend of sweet and savory, soft and crunchy.

The bread boasts a subtly tangy flavor profile, a whisper of sourdough that adds complexity and depth, making it far more interesting than your average loaf. This bread is incredibly versatile. Enjoy it simply, sliced and savored on its own, perhaps with a smear of butter or a drizzle of honey to enhance its natural flavors.

It also makes a fantastic accompaniment to a cheese board, its contrasting textures and flavors complementing the creamy and sharp notes of various cheeses. Consider pairing it with a robust red wine for an elegant appetizer or a light and refreshing white wine for a delightful brunch. Beyond simple enjoyment, this bread can also be transformed into other culinary delights.

Use it to create gourmet sandwiches, its sturdy texture holding up well to a variety of fillings. Toast slices and top them with avocado and a sprinkle of sea salt for a quick and satisfying snack. Or, cube it and bake it into savory croutons to add a rustic touch to your favorite salads.

Whether enjoyed warm from the oven or toasted to perfection, this rustic cherry walnut loaf is sure to become a cherished staple in your kitchen, a bread that evokes comfort, flavor, and a touch of artisanal charm.

Instructions

    1.
Preheat an oven to 450 F. Place a 6 quart dutch oven with the lid on in the oven as soon as you turn it on to allow it to come to temperature with the oven. Combine all dry ingredients together in a bowl with a whisk.
    2.
    Add dried cherries and walnuts.
    3.
Whisk together the wet ingredients (except the water) then add them to the dry ingredients.
    4.
Add in the water ¼ cup at a time. Mixing to incorporate until all the water is combined before adding the next ¼ cup.
    5.
Shape the loaf into a round ball. Carefully remove the hot dutch oven, remove the lid, and spray the inside with nonstick cooking spray. Place rounded dough into the dutch oven. Cover with the lid and allow it to bake for 15 minutes.
    6.
Remove the lid and turn the oven down to 300 F and allow to bake for an additional 2 hours until baked through completely.
    7.
    Allow to cool before slicing.
