Description

Imagine sinking your teeth into a hearty and satisfying creation that captures the essence of pizza without the traditional crust. This 'meatza' delivers that experience. Instead of a carbohydrate-heavy base, a seasoned ground beef crust forms the foundation, offering a robust and flavorful alternative.

The beef, browned to perfection, provides a surprisingly sturdy and delicious base, capable of holding a generous array of toppings. Once the beef crust is ready, a layer of rich tomato sauce is spread, infusing moisture and tanginess into every bite. Then comes the cheese, a blanket of melted mozzarella, bubbling and golden brown, creating that classic pizza stretch we all adore.

The combination of the savory meat crust, the bright tomato sauce, and the creamy cheese sets the stage for a symphony of flavors. But the beauty of this meatza lies in its versatility. While this version features a vibrant mix of colorful bell peppers and sweet onions, feel free to unleash your creativity and customize it with your preferred pizza toppings.

Consider the earthy notes of mushrooms, the salty bite of olives, or the spicy kick of jalapeños. The possibilities are truly endless. Each ingredient adds its unique character, enhancing the overall taste and texture of the dish.

This meatza is surprisingly simple to prepare, making it an excellent option for a weeknight dinner. It's also a fantastic way to sneak in extra protein and vegetables. Its satisfying flavor and customizable nature make it a dish that appeals to a wide range of palates, especially children who enjoy the fun of pizza.

The meatza offers a delightful twist on a classic, ensuring a satisfying and flavorful experience.

Instructions

    1.
Preheat the oven to 390 degrees Fahrenheit and line a shallow oven tray with baking paper.
    2.
Heat the olive oil in a large frying pan over a medium heat. Add the peppers and onions and fry gently until tender and caramelised - around 15/20 minutes.
    3.
While the peppers are cooking, add the ground beef, garlic powder, egg and parmesan to a large mixing bowl. Season well.
    4.
Combine the mixture thoroughly with your hands and transfer to the lined tray. Press into a large circle about 1cm thick to form the base.
    5.
Transfer to the oven to bake for 15 minutes, remove and drain off any excess liquid.
    6.
While the base is cooking you can make the sauce. Add the passata, balsamic, oregano and dried basil to a medium saucepan.
    7.
Bring to the boil gently and reduce to a simmer for about 10 minutes, stirring frequently until thickened.
    8.
Spoon the sauce evenly over the meatza base and top with torn mozzarella chunks.
    9.
Arrange the pepper and onion pieces over the top of the mozzarella.
    10.
Return to the oven for a further 12-15 minutes until the meat is piping hot and cooked through and the cheese is melted. Scatter with fresh basil to serve.
