Description

Indulge in the simple pleasure of a smooth, vanilla-infused custard – a comforting treat that satisfies cravings with its delicate sweetness and creamy texture. This custard is surprisingly easy to create with just a handful of essential ingredients. The preparation involves a gentle whisking together of the components, followed by a slow bake in a water bath.

This method ensures a gentle and even cooking process, resulting in a custard that is unbelievably tender and free from any unwanted browning. Enjoy this delightful dessert warm, fresh from the oven, as a comforting end to your day. Alternatively, prepare several custards in advance and chill them in the refrigerator for a cool and refreshing treat whenever the mood strikes.

Its simple preparation and pure flavor might earn it a permanent place among your favorite desserts. The key to achieving the custard's signature velvety texture lies in the use of a water bath, also known as a bain-marie. Baking the custard in a water bath safeguards it from the direct heat of the oven, preventing it from becoming rubbery or overcooked.

This technique is also perfect for cheesecakes, delicate sauces, or even for melting chocolate, where even heating is paramount. Custards belong to a family of desserts characterized by their creamy, wobbly consistency. Though variations abound, the essence of a custard lies in its use of dairy and eggs to achieve its distinct texture.

While this recipe focuses on a baked custard, the broader category includes such delights as cheesecakes, pots de crème, caramel flans, and even the filling of a classic Boston cream pie – each a testament to the versatility and enduring appeal of the custard family.

Instructions

    1.
Turn on an oven and preheat it to 350 degrees. For each serving of custard, choose an oven-safe, 4-ounce ramekin, and spray it lightly with pan spray. Ramekins are usually made of porcelain or ceramic stone; dont use glass or plastic ramekins. Make the custard simply by whisking together all the ingredients listed. At your discretion, you made other spices or flavors that you enjoy.
    2.
Pour the batter into the ramekin, allowing any air bubbles to naturally rise to the top without tapping the dish. Set the ramekin inside another heat-safe, shallow dish, such as a cake pan or glass baking dish. Use an electric kettle or stovetop to bring some water to a boil. Once the water just reaches a boil, pour the water into the base of the larger dish until it rises to 1-inch high against the ramekin.
    3.
Place the dish of water with the ramekin in your oven. Bake the custard for 30-35 minutes until done. You can pour additional water into your larger dish if the water level becomes too low while the custard is baking. To check for doneness, the custard will naturally pull away from the edges of the ramekin, it will have a slight wiggle to it (no liquid), and will have a clean toothpick test. Enjoy the custard warm or chilled.
