Description

Imagine the tangy zest of a crisp pickle, transformed into a warm, comforting treat. These pickle dogs capture the essence of summer fairs and backyard barbecues, offering a delightful burst of flavor in every bite. Plump, gherkin pickles are carefully skewered, then enveloped in a savory, grain-free batter, enriched with the subtle, cheesy notes of nutritional yeast.

As they fry to a perfect golden brown in hot oil, the batter develops a satisfyingly chewy texture, while the pickle inside softens slightly, retaining a delightful crunch that provides a wonderful contrast. The result is a playful combination of textures and tastes that dance on your palate. These pickle dogs are an ideal snack or appetizer, perfect for sharing at gatherings or enjoying as a fun, vegetarian option.

Serve them with your favorite condiments – a dollop of classic yellow mustard or a vibrant splash of tomato sauce complements their tangy flavor perfectly. The secret to achieving that irresistible golden-brown crust lies in the batter's consistency. A well-whisked batter, clinging beautifully to the pickle, ensures a uniform coating that crisps up evenly during frying.

Whether you choose to deep-fry them for that authentic carnival experience or experiment with air frying for a lighter twist, the result will be a delightful treat. With each bite, you'll experience the familiar tang of the pickle mingling with the savory warmth of the fried batter, creating a unique and surprisingly satisfying flavor profile. These pickle dogs are more than just a snack; they're a playful culinary adventure, offering a taste of summer fun any time of the year.

They’re bound to be a conversation starter and a crowd-pleaser, leaving everyone craving more of their uniquely delicious flavor and satisfying texture.

    5.
    Avocado oil
    Avocado oil
    3 tbsp

Instructions

    1.
Select medium to large-sized whole gherkin pickles. Roll the gherkin pickles between paper towels to absorb any extra liquid. Push a thick, heat-safe skewer (wooden grilling skewer, reusable metal skewer, or large candy apple stick) into each pickle all the way to the other end.
    2.
In a stand mixer, whip an egg white on high speed until it comes to stiffened peaks. When the egg white is stiff, whip in mustard powder and nutritional yeast until the mixture resembles a frothy, pale yellow corn dog batter. Set the batter aside and pour enough avocado oil into a large, wide frying pan (like a wok or large cast-iron skillet) until it filled at least 3-inches deep.
    3.
Heat the avocado oil until it hot - past boiling temperature. One by one, pick up the stick-end of a gherkin pickle and dip it in the egg white batter. Roll the pickles until coated in a thick, even blanket of batter. Gently place the whole pickle into the hot oil and let it fry on one side for 30-60 seconds until the batter turns as golden as you like. Use a pair of heat-safe tongs to rotate the pickle corn dog over to finish frying on the other side. You make cook 2-3 at a time, and repeat this process until they all done frying. Let the pickle corn dogs cool for 5 minutes before eating.
