Description

Delicate bundles of slender green beans, each cluster embraced by the savory richness of thinly sliced, cured ham, create a symphony of flavor and texture in this simple yet elegant side dish. Baking transforms the humble haricot verts into tender-crisp delights, infused with the salty essence of the ham, rendering additional seasoning unnecessary. The ham's natural fats baste the beans, ensuring a moist and flavorful experience with every bite.

For an extra layer of indulgence, a velvety parmesan cream sauce can be prepared in moments, its luxurious texture and sharp, cheesy notes cascading over the wrapped green beans. This addition elevates the dish, providing a comforting warmth that complements the inherent freshness of the beans and the salty ham. The result is a harmonious balance of flavors – the bright, vegetal notes of the green beans, the deep umami of the cured ham, and the rich, creamy tang of the parmesan sauce.

While the classic pairing of green beans and cured ham is a culinary marriage made in heaven, don't hesitate to explore alternative protein options to wrap around the beans. Thinly sliced bacon offers a smoky alternative, while delicate slices of chicken, turkey, or roast beef provide a leaner approach, each imparting its unique character to the dish. When preparing this dish, a gentle hand with salt is recommended, allowing the cured ham and parmesan sauce to contribute their natural saltiness.

For those who prefer to season the green beans beforehand, a light coating of olive oil, along with a sprinkle of your favorite herbs and spices, can add another dimension of flavor. Consider garlic powder, onion powder, lemon pepper, or a blend of dried herbs to complement the other ingredients. Experiment with different cheeses in the cream sauce to discover your personal preference.

While parmesan lends a distinctive sharpness, mozzarella, provolone, gouda, or jack cheese can be used to create a milder, creamier sauce. Remember that the quality of the cheese greatly impacts the final result. Freshly grated cheese from a block will always melt more smoothly and deliver a superior flavor compared to pre-shredded options.

This versatile side dish can be enjoyed hot from the oven or at room temperature, making it an ideal addition to any meal. Prepare a larger batch and pack individual portions for convenient and flavorful lunches throughout the week.

    4 tablespoon, grated

Instructions

    1.
Preheat an oven to 350 degrees and line a sheet tray with parchment paper. Wash and dry the haricot verts, then arrange them in portions of 8 pieces per serving. Arrange a whole slice of prosciutto for each serving, keeping them separated with paper liners to avoid rips or tears.
    2.
Lay a slice of prosciutto horizontally in front of you. Gather a bundle of 8 haricot verts and place the top of the bundle on the left side of the prosciutto. Roll the edge of the prosciutto over the haricot verts and continue rolling the bundle diagonally across the prosciutto until the haricot verts are fully or almost fully wrapped. Repeat this process until all the servings are wrapped.
    3.
Bake the tray of prosciutto-wrapped haricot verts for 25 minutes, or until you see the prosciutto turn crispy and the ends of the beans are browned. While that’s baking, make the parmesan sauce. Melt the butter in a pan or small pot over low heat. Whisk the heavy cream and onion powder into the melted butter. When the ingredients start bubbling over low heat, stir in the parmesan cheese until you have a creamy sauce. Drizzle the parmesan sauce over the hot prosciutto-wrapped haricot verts for serving.
