Description

Imagine a Thanksgiving centerpiece, a beautifully baked ham, its surface gleaming with a rich, savory glaze. The oven's warmth transforms the pork into a tender, succulent delight, promising a flavorful experience with every slice. The meat, infused with its natural juices, is both satisfyingly hearty and surprisingly delicate.

Complementing the savory ham is a vibrant cranberry jam, a jewel-toned concoction that balances sweetness with tartness. The cranberries, simmered to a soft, yielding texture, release their unique flavor, a perfect counterpoint to the richness of the pork. Hints of orange zest dance through the jam, adding a bright, citrusy note that awakens the palate.

The subtle warmth of spices like cinnamon and cloves weaves through the cranberry's tang, creating a comforting and festive aromatic profile. This dish offers a delightful contrast of textures and temperatures. Enjoyed hot, the ham's tenderness is enhanced by the melting jam, creating a harmonious blend of flavors.

Served cold, perhaps the next day, the ham firms up slightly, offering a different, equally pleasing sensation. The jam, chilled, becomes a refreshing counterpoint to the savory meat, making it an ideal choice for sandwiches or a quick, flavorful snack. The beauty of this recipe lies in its adaptability.

While the cranberry jam provides a classic holiday touch, you can easily tailor the spices to your preference. A touch more cinnamon for a warmer profile, a pinch of nutmeg for a deeper note, or even a hint of star anise for an exotic twist. Feel free to adjust the sweetness to your liking, ensuring the jam complements, rather than overwhelms, the savory ham.

Whether you're seeking a memorable holiday centerpiece or simply a delicious and satisfying meal, this ham with cranberry jam is sure to impress. It's a celebration of flavors and textures, a dish that invites you to savor each bite and appreciate the simple pleasures of good food.

Instructions

    1.
Preheat your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit. Place the ham on a shallow oven tray and loosely cover it with foil. Transfer the ham to the preheated oven and bake for 45 minutes. While the ham is baking, you can start preparing the cranberry jam glaze. In a small saucepan, combine the dried cranberries, orange juice, orange zest, cinnamon, maple-flavored syrup, ginger, ground cloves, and salt. Add half of the water and stir thoroughly to combine. Place the saucepan over medium-high heat and bring the mixture to a boil.
    2.
Allow the cranberries to bubble and simmer until they become plump and rehydrated. Reduce the heat to low and continue to simmer. Gradually add the remaining water, a little at a time, while carefully crushing the cranberries with a fork. Continue simmering until the fruit has broken down, and all the liquid has evaporated, resulting in a sticky, jam-like consistency. This process should take approximately 10-15 minutes. Add more water as needed until you achieve the desired consistency. Once the jam is ready, set it aside to cool completely.
    3.
After the ham has baked for 45 minutes, remove it from the oven and take off the foil. Score the soft fat on top in a criss-cross pattern. Divide the cranberry jam in half, setting one half aside for serving. Using a spoon or spatula, generously rub the remaining cranberry jam into the scored fat and around the edges of the ham. Return the ham to the oven for an additional 30 minutes, or until it is fully cooked through. Baste the ham with the cooking juices halfway through the baking time. Serve the ham hot or cold, accompanied by the reserved cranberry jam.
