Description

Scotch eggs, a delightful treat, offer a satisfying combination of textures and flavors. This version, cooked in an air fryer, provides a streamlined approach to enjoying this classic dish. The most notable adaptation lies in the breading, where a pork rind-based coating adds a unique, savory crunch that many find even more appealing than traditional breadcrumbs.

The beauty of using an air fryer is the ease and convenience it brings to the cooking process. It simplifies the preparation compared to traditional deep-frying or baking methods. While some attention to detail is needed, each step is designed to be manageable and rewarding.

The heart of a scotch egg is a perfectly cooked egg, ideally medium to hard-boiled, providing a creamy yolk and firm white. This egg is then enveloped in a layer of seasoned ground sausage, offering a hearty and savory counterpoint to the richness of the egg. If pre-seasoned breakfast sausage isn't available, plain ground pork works wonderfully, allowing you to customize the flavor profile to your liking.

Traditionally, scotch eggs are deep-fried to achieve a golden-brown, crispy exterior. However, air frying delivers a similar result with less oil, making it a lighter yet equally satisfying option. The breading, whether traditional or the pork rind alternative, adds that crucial textural element, providing a satisfying crunch with every bite.

Scotch eggs are incredibly versatile. They make a fantastic breakfast option, providing a protein-packed start to the day. They also serve as a substantial and flavorful snack, perfect for staving off hunger between meals.

Whether enjoyed hot, with the flavors melding together in a warm embrace, or cold, as a convenient and portable treat, scotch eggs are always a welcome addition to any menu. While some may find scotch eggs intimidating to make, this recipe is designed to be approachable and straightforward. With clear instructions and readily available ingredients, you can confidently create a batch of delicious scotch eggs that will impress your family and friends.

Don't be afraid to experiment with different seasonings in the ground sausage to tailor the flavor to your preferences. A touch of spice can add a delightful kick, while incorporating shredded cheese into the breading can enhance the crispiness and add a cheesy note. The possibilities are endless, allowing you to create a truly personalized scotch egg experience.

Instructions

    1.
Make soft-boiled eggs by placing the eggs in a pot and covering them with water. Bring the water to a boil, then remove from heat and let the eggs sit covered for 3 minutes. Transfer the eggs to an ice bath to cool, then peel them. Don't worry if some egg breaks off, as imperfections will be covered in the next step.
    2.
In a bowl, combine ground sausage with pepper, paprika, garlic powder, and onion powder. Divide the sausage into 2oz portions. Flatten each portion, place an egg in the center, and wrap the meat around it. Repeat until all eggs are wrapped in sausage.
    3.
Preheat an air fryer to 350 degrees. In separate bowls, prepare heavy cream and a breading mixture of almond flour and pork rinds. Roll each sausage-wrapped egg in the breading, then drench it in cream, letting excess cream drip off, and roll a second time in the breading. Place each breaded scotch egg on an air fryer tray lined with parchment paper.
    4.
Bake the scotch eggs in the air fryer for 18 minutes. Rotating them halfway through is optional. Let the eggs cool for 5 minutes before slicing into them.
