Keto Air Fryer Kohlrabi Fries

Description

These air-fried kohlrabi fries are a delightful way to enjoy a unique vegetable. The preparation begins with peeling the kohlrabi to reveal its crisp, pale interior. Once peeled, the kohlrabi is cut into fry-like shapes, ready to be transformed into a satisfying snack or side dish.

Tossed lightly in olive oil, the kohlrabi sticks are then seasoned with a savory blend of smoked paprika, garlic powder, and sea salt. The smoked paprika imparts a warm, smoky flavor that complements the natural sweetness of the kohlrabi. Garlic powder adds a savory depth, while the sea salt enhances all the flavors, creating a well-rounded taste.

Air frying brings out the best in these kohlrabi fries. The hot air circulating within the air fryer ensures that each fry is cooked evenly, resulting in a satisfyingly crispy exterior and a tender interior. The fries achieve a beautiful golden-brown color, signaling their readiness to be devoured.

The texture is key: a slight bite on the outside gives way to a soft, almost creamy center. For those without an air fryer, baking offers a suitable alternative. While the texture might differ slightly, baking still allows the kohlrabi to caramelize and develop a delicious flavor.

Remember to turn the fries occasionally to ensure even browning. These kohlrabi fries are incredibly versatile. They make a flavorful side dish to accompany burgers, sandwiches, or grilled chicken.

Alternatively, enjoy them as a light and healthy snack, perfect for satisfying those mid-afternoon cravings. Their subtle sweetness and smoky undertones make them an appealing alternative to traditional potato fries. Don't forget to explore the culinary possibilities of the kohlrabi leaves; they can be used in salads, soups, or sautéed as a leafy green.

The fries are a blank canvas and can be paired with various dipping sauces, from spicy aioli to creamy avocado dip, for an extra layer of flavor.

Instructions

    1.
Use a sharp chef’s knife to cut the leaves from the kohlrabi root. Save the leaves for another use.
    2.
Cut the tough outer skin off the root until you reveal the translucent flesh. Ensure all of the white-ish colored skin is removed.
    3.
Slice the peeled root into ¼” rounds, then cut the rounds into ¼” thick julienne slices.
    4.
Place the julienne strips into a large mixing bowl.
    5.
Add the remaining ingredients (olive oil, smoked paprika, pink Himalayan sea salt, and garlic powder) and toss well. Add half of the fries into the air fryer basket and cook at 350°F (175°C) for 10 minutes.
    6.
Shake the basket and then cook at a higher temp for a shorter time, which is 6 mins at 400°F (200°C). Repeat with the remaining fries. Taste fries adding more salt if desired. Serve immediately with ketchup.
